same/different

i still wear the same things
i still do the same things
i still like the same things
but i'm different
out here kissin' my friends
howlin' "everything ends"
kind of makin' amends
stayin' present
the only change i like is the kind that you dig for
under the cushions
the only place i hide is in plain sight
here, out in the open
'cause it's all the same refrain
stuck in an endless loop
you've only got yourself to blame
& i know it's true
despite all that went wrong
time keeps movin' along
& it'll make me real strong
if it doesn't kill me
sleepin' in my old room
i still dream about you
'cause of course i do
muscle memory
worried how i'll come across
if i just sing about loss
& how much everything costs
man, it's scary
but we've all been bereft
and you get what you get
it's a bummer
i'm left feelin' guilty
i held my breath & counted to ten
it didn't do a damn thing
i iced my hands & i called my friends
hung up before the first ring
'cause it's all the same refrain
stuck in an endless loop
you've only got yourself to blame
& i know it's true
so i guess i can't complain
(though i wanted to)
but it's all the goddamn same livin' without you
yeah, it's all the goddamn same livin' without you
it's all the goddamn same livin' without you
the only change i like is the kind that you dig for
under the cushions

everest

'member that time we got too high
and saw that movie about everest
you asked "does everybody die?"
almost, but not quite
that theatre's now a condo
what a surprise
where you can get a room
for a cool mil or 1.5
but as we sat there in the dark
horrified
i could feel a little spark
our fingers almost touching
now you check in once a week
just to say hi
& i don't make a fuss
no discussions
'member that time we rode for miles
just to end up going nowhere
i asked "is this the last time?"
almost, but not quite
i caught up with your brother
he's doin' fine
told me you got into property
& buyin' stocks online
but as i sat there in the park
undermined
wonderin' what punctuation marks
had made me seem obsessive
and if this fire's burnin' out
i should let it die
i'll put the kindling away
but i got one more question
was it so easy for you?
i get by, it's all i can do
but was it easy, easy for you?
remember that time we got too high
& saw that movie about everest?
you asked "does everybody die?"
almost,
but not quite

unbidden

unbidden i'm gettin'
pictures of you
biking to your cousin's house in 2002
you bought a blue soda & called it a day
unbidden i'm gettin' to know you okay
unbidden i'm gettin' distracted again
i try to keep a lid on it
& not ask "who, what, where & when"
but you know what they say about cats & curiosity
well, unbidden i'm gettin' there so let's just wait and see
see if i
in time
will notice
yeah if i
in time
will catch on
'cause it's not everything but it's not nothin'
and there's a tiny part of me that can't let go
so i sit wondering if things were different
does that part of me know somethin' that i don't?
unbidden i'm gettin' lost in my house
i try not to bring it up like a good little mouse
i scurry down tunnels like memory lane but
unbidden i'm going a little insane
'cause it's not everything but it's not nothin'
and there's a tiny part of me that can't move on
so i sit wondering if things were different
would that part of me succeed if lines were drawn
shoulda left this unwritten
so let's say i'm kiddin'
'cause it comes unbidden
if i
in time
will notice
yeah if i
in time
will catch on
'cause it's not everything but it's not nothin'
and there's a tiny part of me that can't let go
so i sit wondering if things were different
does that part of me know somethin' that i don't?
'cause it's not everything but it's not nothin'
and there's a tiny part of me that can't move on
so i sit wondering if things were different
would that part of me succeed if lines were drawn
shoulda left this unwritten
so let's say i'm kiddin'
'cause it comes unbidden
it comes unbidden, yeah

green tea
04:06
|
|||
green tea, slowly sipped
calloused fingertips are calmly reaching across the board
tapped out a month ago
packed up, coming home a little different than before
make some jokes about the price of rent
cut off whatever question is next
put on a smile, perk up those lips
green tea, slowly sipped
cold beer in the fridge
drink two, scratch the itch
then take notice of the hour
hands up, volunteer to drive home
turn left here
drop 'em off & park the car
tiptoe downstairs so nobody knows
exactly what time you get home
they wouldn't care - but old habits stick
cold beer in the fridge
hot knives on the stove
blinds up, windows closed
the smell of sawdust in the air
walk back in the rain
"you'll catch your death!" someone exclaims
which is pretty funny, given this year
narrate every action in your brain
to prove you're movin', you're okay
whatever gets you through the day
walk back in the rain
walk back in the rain
hot knives on the stove
cold beer in the fridge
green tea, slowly sipped
